Keeping It Simple in Travel Demand Modeling Field (12-3355)
This paper sets aside utility functions and rules in the travel demand field. It explores a number of not well known choice heuristics. It also explores simple adaptations to new transport policy. The focus is mode choice. The study rests on a three part qualitative gaming simulation carried out in a laboratory at MIT on June 27 2011, with a resricted range of subjects. The results show that simple rules and simple adaptations predominate. For example in 40 instances of mode choice only one showed tradeoffs. Four showed one reason decision making and the remainder showed the counting rule. The results support the development of different decisionmaking models perhaps following Gigerenzer et al.'s computational models.
