Event Number:
474
Event Title:
Modeling Theories and Practices in Freight Planning and Logistics, Part 1 (Part 2, Session 518 )
Event Date:
Jan 24 2012 8:00AM- 9:45AM
Event Location:
Shoreham, Executive
Event Description:
Event Agenda:
The first of two sessions, this session follows the call for papers in modeling of freight planning and logistics. The call specially emphasizes new development in modeling theories and practices. The models cover freight planning and operations in both private and public sectors and various modes of transportation. They represent the current state of the art in freight planning and logistics operations.
Comparison of Parametric and Nonparametric Hazard Models for Stop Durations on Urban Tours with Commercial Vehicles (12-1428)
This paper presents hazard-based stop duration models for stop duration of commercial vehicles in urban areas. Two hazard survival models were estimated using passively-collected GPS data to predict the stop duration of commercial vehicles undertaking urban pickup and delivery tours. The first model is an accelerated failure time parametric hazard model and the second model is a proportional non-parametric hazard model. Explanatory variables include time of day, population/ employment density, number of stops, distance of inbound and outbound trips, and attributes of destination establishments such as sales volume and industry classification. Models were estimated with and without establishment data, given that these data may not always be available for model application. Results show that passively-collected GPS data can be used to estimate stop duration models when linked with other data sources providing appropriate explanatory variables. Results show the parametric models outperform the non-parametric models, including higher goodness of fit measures and better distribution of the stop duration hazard distributions.
