North America continues to grapple to define the best approach for implementing intercity and high-speed rail services. This session draws on operations and economic impact assessments from Asia while providing some markers on allocating scarce resources between improved rolling stock and fixed physical plant. Researchers from the U.S. Midwest provide observations and a modal-competition framework to consider the future competitiveness of U.S. intercity passenger rail.
