TRB 89th Annual Meeting (January 10-14, 2010)
Event Number:485
Event Title:Environmental Planning for NextGen: Opportunities and Pitfalls of Implementing Area Navigation and Required Navigation Performance Flight Procedures at Noise-Sensitive Airports
Event Date:Tuesday, January 12, 2010
Event Location:Shoreham, Diplomat
Presiding Officers: Kristi McKenney - Port of Oakland
Sponsored By: Environmental Impacts of Aviation  (AV030)
Airfield and Airspace Capacity and Delay  (AV060)

Event Description:No description available

The stated benefits of NextGen include reduced fuel burn and improved noise and emissions performance from more direct routings, RNAV STARs/SIDs and optimized descent arrivals. However, some procedures may reduce the geographic distribution of flights over the fairly wide areas that are characteristic of today’s vectored operations, possibly resulting in opposition from residents underlying the new, more concentrated track, and jeopardizing Nextgen's implementation.
