Use of Spread Footings on Soils for Highway Bridges
AFS30 - Foundations of Bridges and Other Structures
AFS40 - Subsurface Soil-Structure Interaction
The sponsoring Committees are soliciting papers for a session on the use of spread footings on soils for highway bridges. Authors are invited to submit papers on topics that promote the increased use of spread footing on competent or improved natural soils and engineered fill (including reinforced fill) for the support of bridge structures. Topics include but are not limited to:- Case histories of successful and economical use. Describe all the information that would help practicing engineers to consider spread footings in the design when appropriate, including reasons and advantages for selecting spread footings (e.g. saving in cost and time), foundation soil information (from results of the subsurface investigation), design information (e.g. tolerable and predicted settlements, foundation layout), methods for construction and QA/QC (including tests on foundation soil and fill conducted during construction). Short- or long-term performance records of bridges supported by spread footings on soils obtained from instrumentation/monitoring programs and field inspections are especially valued. - Results of axial compression load tests on spread footings (load-settlement curve). Present the results of laboratory and in-situ tests on the foundation soil, layout, materials, and construction of the test foundations, and the type and procedure for the load tests. - Reliability evaluation of the settlement and resistance prediction methods for spread footings using results from load tests or from instrumented bridges. - Scientifically supported criteria for tolerable bridge and foundation settlements.- Proven design methods for spread footings Please show AFS30 and AFS40 on the Paper Submission form to indicate that the paper is being submitted in response to this Call for Papers.
Bridges and Other Structures
Authors interested in submitting papers are advised to visit www.TRB.org/AnnualMeeting and review the Information for Authors. Authors submitting papers in response to this Call for Papers should submit full papers for peer review to the Transportation Research Board online at www.TRB.org/AnnualMeeting. This paper submission is open from June 1 to August 1. Please show the sponsoring committee name or the Call for Papers title on the papers submission form. Please contact the Call for Papers organizer if you are submitting a paper or need additional information.
Paper Submission Requirements
TRB has a single paper submittal deadline for the Annual Meeting. Papers must be in PDF format and submitted by August 1. The paper submission website will close when it is no longer August 1 anywhere in the world. Also, authors are asked to add line numbering to their papers in their word-processing program (starting with number one on each page) prior to converting to PDF to facilitate the review process. TRB recommends that authors submit their papers well before the deadline to avoid last minute complications and delays.
