Estimating Flood Flows in a World of Climate Change and Non-stationarity

Call Description:
Policy makers and transportation managers are concerned that the significant investment in our bridges and culverts is properly targeted. The size and cost of these structures is directly dependent on the hydrologic estimates for the design discharges. Almost all hydrologic methods rely directly or indirectly on measurements of historical precipitation or flow measurements based on the assumption that past behavior is valid in predicting future events. This assumption of "stationarity" is now being challenged and few techniques are available for adapting our methods to account for non-stationarity, including the potential effects of climate change.

This call for papers is intended for a session addressing both the degree to which stationarity is no longer a reliable hypothesis and, if so, what can be done about it. Of particular interest is whether climate change is a driver moving us into non-stationarity. Papers addressing this problem, particularly those with ideas for improvements, are encouraged.

This paper submission is open from June 1 to August 1. Please show the sponsoring committee name or the Call for Papers title on the papers submission form. Paper Submission Requirements

TRB has a single paper submittal deadline for the Annual Meeting. Papers must be in PDF format and submitted by August 1. The paper submission website will close when it is no longer August 1 anywhere in the world. Also, authors are asked to add line numbering to their papers in their word-processing program (starting with number one on each page) prior to converting to PDF to facilitate the review process. TRB recommends that authors submit their papers well before the deadline to avoid last minute complications and delays.
